Wanting

I like the flat I am living in. It is light and airy, it has plenty of room. I have decorated the toilet. The bathroom is a bit drab, and some things in there have the look of a home handyman with a 'she'll be right' attitude. The kitchen is a bit old and the stove is a bit temperamental, but I am quite fond of it. The flat could use some sprucing, but I haven't felt any urge to live somewhere newer or bigger or with a back yard.

And then I saw this place.

It was the bath that got me first. I like the colour of the tiles and I in my imaginary house I have a bath that looks out over an excellent view, only I hadn't thought about setting it in to the floor.

There is a lemon tree at the back, gas cooking and a window seat in the kitchen (three more features of my imaginary house, though the window seat is in the library in my imaginary house).

There is a climbing wall in the living room, but I like rock climbing and it might give the cats something to think about.

Of course, then I turned over the price tag and looked at the number written there. I might just go back to saving up for Canada.

A good thing about only having a few people over for dinner is that there is way more lemon delicious. (There is quite a lot left over, and left over dessert wine, so maybe next time invite one more person.)

We Call them Ampersands

I have a friend obsessed with pirates. Really really obsessed. Dress up and go to conventions obsessed. I should show him this place.

I prefer ampersands.

Graffiti Men

The footy boys have moved out from downstairs.

No more barbeques, no more weird smells, no more cat escaping into their apartment because they always left their door open.

I will sort of miss them. They were much better neighbours than the abusive couple who lived opposite and the screaming toddler who has moved in to replace them.

The night is lovely, dark and deep...

Last night we went out to celebrate the arrival of a baby by getting his dad very drunk on tequila.

Walking home, the night was like one of the nights in Andavadoaka, cool(ish) breeze, but warm and comfortable.

The cool change got the cats moving for the first time in days. There was not much sleep had last night and my thoughts turn to taxidermy. Or mittens.

I shall call him squishy and he shall be my squishy.

So often, knitting looks like marine life.

Makes me wish I'd been braver

I hung out with an old housemate, yesterday. She has recently had a baby and wanted hair that was a little easier to look after.

She now has ridiculously cute hair to suit her ridiculously cute baby.

Bless the halls

Christmas is going to be... complicated, this year. We may end up with one of those Christmases other people have where there is drama and the dog gets incinerated in an amusing incident with a barbeque and everyone is supposed to be happy, but no one is.

Here's hoping we just cook up a big damn meal and everyone can go for a swim in the morning and then eat until they fall asleep. And, as much as I love giving them, I am going to suggest a different way of doing Christmas presents. Or not at all. And see how that goes (so long as I am allowed to knit people socks).

Repetition

I can listen to the same song, the same album, over and over again and not get tired of it. I eat the same thing for breakfast most days. I walk the same way to school most days. I crave ritual and knowing when things will happen. I will read the same book or the same film more often than I admit to.

I think this is the 5th Sunday in a row I have been in the same cafe. Spending the morning getting school work done and the nooning eating good good food with friends.

I carved "love" on the table. It gave me a nice feeling of permanence.

And I have tentative plans to be there next Sunday, too.

grownup stuff

As well as the kitchen dresser, I have a dressing table (that matches the headboard and the chest of drawers). I have furniture that matches.

The cats love it because there are more things to hide under.

Progress

It is terrifying how fast these cats work things out. Very often Mis will see something that she wants and then will call Pan to come and work out how to get it for her.

I am almost afraid to leave them on their own in the house during the day. Except I am fairly sure they spend the bulk of the day asleep.

Frustration

I can *see* the ripe loquats, I just can't *reach* the ripe loquats.

I need someone to hold on to my ankles while I lean out the window and pick the loquats.

Hissing Sid

The bravest animals in the land are Captain Beaky and his band
That's Timid Toad, Reckless Rat, Artful Owl and Batty Bat.

They march through the woodlands singing songs
that tell how they have righted wrongs...

"No, make it me!" Said Reckless Rat
I'll stand there in my reckless hat
When Hissing Sid picks up my trail,
I'll just lasso him with my tail!"

...Then into sight the snake came hopping,
Right past his hole, no sign of stopping
Said Reckless Rat, "That's rather funny,
"There's something jumping in his tummy."

The 'Day That Ends in Y' cake

I was going to call it the 'Somebody Sneezed' cake, but that seemed a little gross, given the icing. At any rate, I thought it was a cunning reference to the impromptu nature of the cake at the same time as being a quote from the same episode as the line 'She who hangs out a lot in cemeteries.'

Banana and cardamom with cream cheese icing.

Time and Space management

I keep telling them they don't fit.
